The world looks a little different right now, both from a personal and a professional perspective. You might be wondering about grants and COVID-19, how funding will be impacted in the short and long term.
As the pandemic crisis begins to ease, expect to see significant boosts to grant funding with a particular focus on projects that target construction and key projects that will support job creation. Restarting the economy and minimising long term unemployment will be a vital concern for both State and Federal Government.
So what does that mean for you right now? To some extent, you need to ‘just keep swimming’ and deal with on-the-ground issues that are impacting on your community immediately. But it’s also important to think about the future so you are in a position to quickly respond to grant opportunities when they are released. It’s likely that they will have rapid turn around times, and being prepared will be the key to making a successful application within the opening window.
How can you get prepared?
Develop a clear project plan and know the scope of your project. You should have all your planning material in place – design drawings, costings, risk plans and the like. Everything you need to ‘press go’ immediately on grant awards.
Prepare a business case for major projects. You’ll need something robust enough for a government officer to make an assessment of the project’s outcomes and undertake appropriate due diligence on both the project and your organisation’s capacity.
Know the economic impact of your project. Consider commissioning a cost-benefit analysis that demonstrates how your project will support job growth and positive economic outcomes.
Done is better than perfect. Obviously you want to present the best possible case but if you have a choice between getting something of a good standard ready or agonising over every detail, opt to just get it done. A half-finished ‘perfect’ funding application is going to lose out to the ‘pretty good’ completed application.
Use your networks. Get your project idea out there even before any grant opportunities are announced. Make sure relevant political representatives, government officers, and other influencers and decision-makers know about your proposal and understand its value.
